Kyiv Oblast is a region in central Ukraine, surrounding the capital city of Kyiv. The region is known for its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and important economic significance. Its cultural heritage includes numerous historical landmarks, such as the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and St. Sophia's Cathedral.

 

Total Area: 28,131 km²

 

Administrative Structure: The region is divided into 7 districts, 25 cities, 30 urban-type settlements, and 1,182 villages. The administrative center is the city of Kyiv, which is administratively not part of the region.

 

Demographics: As of January 1, 2022, the population of Kyiv Oblast was approximately 1.8 million people. Due to Russian aggression, the population has significantly decreased.

 

Interesting Facts: The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, which has become a symbol of nuclear disaster, is located in Kyiv Oblast. Kyiv region is a land with an ancient history, where numerous historical sites, such as Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi and Bila Tserkva, are located. The Kyiv Reservoir, located in the region, is one of the largest in Ukraine.

 

Russian-Ukrainian War: In February-March 2022, Kyiv Oblast became one of the main directions of the Russian offensive. The  cities of Bucha, Irpin, and Borodianka suffered significant destruction as a result of the Russian occupation. After the liberation of the Kyiv region from Russian troops, numerous war crimes committed by the occupiers were discovered. As a result of the war, the region suffered enormous destruction and losses.
